Raffles Grand Hotel d'Angkor, Siem Reap, Cambodia

Siem Reap, home to the largest religious structure on earth, Angkor Wat, is also home to Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor.

Take a step back in time, but with all the mod-cons, in this luxury resort built in 1932. There are hints of its past with antique finger dial telephones, the original wire-cage lift and a Raffles matchbox in the ashtray on your porch, just like the ones my father used to collect.

There are modern day niceties too, with Cambodia’s largest swimming pool enticing guests from their rooms into the beautifully landscaped property. Turn to today’s list of creature comforts and Raffles does not disappoint.

Travellers can relax and revitalise in the spa, enjoy an infused cocktail at the Elephant Bar, dine in one of the fine restaurants, shop for quality products, work out in the gym or view a free in-house exhibition such as the permanent John McDermott photography exhibition. Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor is located close to the Royal Palace and walking distance to the old markets and Pub Street. Allow US$2 for a tuk tuk one-way.

The big three temples not to be missed are Angkor Wat, Ta Prohm and Bayon, however, if time allows, there are many other things to see and do like visiting a floating village, Banteay Srei (the lady or pink temple), the silk and butterfly farm, and night markets.

A few extra days to explore this ancient and beautiful city is worthy of consideration.
