Six hot new Maldives resorts
Known for its pristine white sand beaches, azure blue seas and luxurious overwater bungalows, the Maldives has long been the paradise destination at the top of many travellers’ hot lists.
And with these six new luxury resorts opening this year, things are about to get even hotter.
Kandima Maldives, opened February
Located on a lush tropical island in the Dhaalu Atoll, this soulful resort caters to couples, groups, families and honeymooners, offering far more than just a beach holiday. Featuring an extensive range of experiences and facilities, including the longest pool in the Maldives at 100 metres, art studio, photo studio, marine biology school, kids club, spa, and ten restaurants and bars, boredom here does not exist. Accommodation wise, there are 274 stylish studios and villas across 11 categories to choose from, and each one has its own private terrace and uninterrupted views.
Dhigali Maldives, opening May 2017
As one of the only resorts to sit in the Raa Atoll, Dhigali will bring a modern minimalist design to a wonderfully remote part of the Maldives. Accessible by a scenic 40-minute seaplane ride from Malé airport, the resort features a house reef within swimming distance and a beautiful sandbank at the tip of the island. There will be 182 on-shore and over-water villas and suites and facilities will include five restaurants, two bars, kids club, spa, fitness centre, and a water sports and diving centre.
Mercure Maldives Kooddoo Resort, opening mid 2017
Located on Gaafu Alifu Atoll, this resort promises to provide one of the best value accommodation options in the Maldives. There are 43 over-water villas and 25 scattered along the white sandy beach, all of which have been built using local materials. Inspired by Maldivian culture and the spirit of travel, the interior design will feature bright colours and stylish furniture. Facilities will include a spa, fitness centre, tennis, two restaurants and bars, a range of water sports and excursions, and a kids club.
Grand Park Kodhipparu, opening mid 2017
Just a 20-minute speedboat ride from Malé International Airport, this new all-villa resort in the North Malé Atoll will feature 120 idyllic villas, comprising a range of beach-front pool villas, overwater villas with direct access to the crystal-clear turquoise waters and overwater pool villas that come with a private infinity pool. Facilities will include a harbour beach club and pool bar, a swimming pool, fitness centre, water sports and diving centre, wellness centre and spa, sunrise yoga deck, and children’s activity centre, and there will also be two gourmet restaurants offering indoor and outdoor settings with sea views.
Baglioni Resort Maldives, opening October 2017
Located on Maagau in Dhaalu Atoll, this Italian-owned resort will offer and unforgettable stay with a blend of sport, relaxation, and mouth-watering gourmet dining. Boasting elegant Italian design, the resort will feature 96 villas, the Jungle Spa, which will offer a host of deluxe natural treatments in a lush, tropical setting, and plenty of activities such as beach volleyball, a beach gym and a range of watersports.
LUX* North Male Atoll, opening November 2017
Set to disrupt the Maldivian mould, the resort will offer over-sized one, two and three-bedroom penthouse-style residences with a vibrant South Beach influence, instead of traditional thatched villas. Elegantly styled, each of the 60 curvaceous residences promises its own private pool, breezy indoor-outdoor living spaces and wraparound decking. All of the double-storey beachfront and ocean villas will boast a living area of at least 350sqm and, on top, a large private terrace deck perched above the island or lagoon. Just an hour by speedboat from Malé, the resort will offer an overwater spa, PADI dive centre, watersports, ocean-view rooftop bar, big-screen cinema, kids club, yoga plinth and two fine restaurants and even a wine cave.
