The sounds of New Caledonia

SPECIAL EDITORIAL PROMOTION

New Caledonia is a country that appeals to the senses; full of rich colours, extraordinary flavours and sounds as interesting and diverse as its landscape and people.  It is home to the world’s largest tropical lagoon, a beautiful blend of French and Kanak culture, with fantastic scenery and wildlife. New Caledonia Tourism sent musicians “Crooked Colours” to the heart of the Pacific and followed their young, adventurous spirits as they searched for, discovered and captured the everyday sounds of the islands.

New Caledonia’s sundry landscapes deliver sounds, and voices, that will delight the senses and highlight the blend of cultures united on the islands.  The varied regions offer unique and interesting sounds, whether they be from the blue waters of the crystal clear lagoon (the world’s largest), the clip clop of hooves from rural ‘cowboy country’ in the west, the crunch of baguettes in the Gallic hub of Noumea or the echo of percussion instruments from Kanak villages in the east.

The music scene in New Caledonia is thriving and is one of the most active in the Pacific. Music festivals are dotted all over New Caledonia and run throughout the year, catering for all ages and tastes.  Large multi-day events like ‘The Black Woodstock Rock Festival’ – a three day weekend of camping, culture and rock – and the Francofolies Festival – an offshoot of the renowned Francofolies Festival in La Rochelle (France) – showcase local talent alongside established international acts.  More intimate events like ‘Fete de la Musique’ (The Musical Festival of Noumea) and ‘ le Mouv Festival’ bring local artists, with their mix of kaneka, hip hop, rock, reggae, electronica and soul, to the stage. The unique combination of French and Kanak music is continually evolving through local and international artist collaboration.

Crooked Colours are an Australian band on the rise, receiving heavy air play on Triple J, the release of their acclaimed debut album and a recent sold out national tour.  Their mix of indie and electronic sounds which are moulded into diverse and layered productions, are both subtle and addictive.  Their wandering, unstructured musical style is a perfect reflection of New Caledonia’s idyllic and relaxed atmosphere.

The Band went on a mission to New Caledonia to explore urban and wild regions, to capture interesting sounds and video along their journey, and to collate this collection of sounds into a music piece that connects the listener to the destination.
