Luxury hospitality brand, Anantara, this year unveiled the first and only observatory in the Maldives – Anantara Kihavah SKY bar. On an island accessible only by private chartered flights, SKY bar now offers guests the opportunity to enjoy a luxury overwater setting combined with a signature cocktail bar and stargazing experience through the most powerful telescope in the Indian Ocean.

Stellar location
A sneak peek at the SKY bar shows a panorama lounge with oversized daybeds perched above a turquoise lagoon, and a circular bar – that serves as a centrepiece – complete with a resident mixologist and DJ. The custom-built Ash-dome observatory sits on the roof deck and is surrounded by open skies and the ocean waves below.

Reach for the SKY bar
The overwater observatory houses a research-grade 16” Meade LX200 telescope mounted on a giant field tripod. Remote controlled and custom-built for optimal viewing with 360-degree movement, the powerful telescope opens up to a whole new world of wonder. Resident astronomer, Ali Shameem, oversaw the entire launch of Anantara Kihavah’s observatory and will lead each guest through their stargazing experience while they sip champagne and signature cocktails.

Under a night sky
Mr Shameem grew up on an island without electricity and spent his childhood mapping the constellations until he became the protégé of Italian astronomer Dr. Massimo Tarenghi who headed the ALMA observatory in Chile. At SKY bar, through the telescope, guests will see the pale yellow rings of Saturn, the counter-rotating zones and belts of Jupiter, the Milky Way shining Omega Centauri and more than 300,000 stars shining bright in the constellation of Hercules.

Celestial journey
The Maldives’ location around the equator means the stars of both hemispheres are visible from Anantara Kihavah, which, when coupled with minimal light pollution and open skies, ensures an unforgettable astronomy experience.  Anantara Kihavah can also enhance guests’ experience with opportunities such as swimming with manta rays, dining underwater at SEA, enjoying a private cinema under the stars and naming a star after a loved one. skykihavahmaldives.com
