Five good reasons to visit the Yarra Valley’s Seville Estate

The Upper Yarra Valley’s Seville Estate rewards those who take the road less travelled.

The History

Located just an hour’s drive from Melbourne, Seville was first founded in 1972 by Dr Peter and Margaret McMahon. While other wineries plant in proven grounds, the Estate’s roots are set in the soil of the Upper Yarra Valley at an elevation of 200m, away from the valley crowds. Today the winery is managed by Dylan McMahon (pictured), who joined Seville Estate in 1998 following the passion ignited by his grandparents a generation before.

The Wines

Seville Estate has been consistently awarded five stars by the James Halliday Wine Companion, and most recently won ‘Winery of the Year’ at this year’s 2019 Halliday Wine Companion Awards. Each year James Halliday and his tasting panel determine the best from a pool of several thousand featured in the annual Halliday Wine Companion Guide. In addition to the Winery of the Year award, Seville Estate’s 2017 release includes 10 wines awarded with 95 points or more including its signature Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay ranges.

The Cellar Door

The Seville Estate Cellar Door is open 7 days a week, from 10am to 5pm and offers visitors complimentary walk-in tasting of their Estate wines. This intimate experience allows wine connoisseurs to get up close and personal with the award-winning wines and for only $15, visitors can taste all wines rated 94 points or above by leading wine expert James Halliday.

The Restaurant

The weekend restaurant draws heavy inspiration from nature and delivers an ever-changing menu. With bread baked daily, garnished with pickles, chutneys and ferments all sourced locally. The menu items embody a focus on vegetables and herbs that are grown on site. Seville has solidified close relationships with local producers and suppliers, who are now responsible for delivering fresh products to the chefs. The restaurant is open from Friday to Sunday; perfect for a weekend getaway far from the hustle and bustle of Melbourne’s CBD.

The Accommodation

Seville Estate has undergone refurbishments to their accommodation but has retained the original décor. There are two types of accommodation on offer – the Vineyard Apartments and the Seville Homestead. Newly renovated, the apartments are perfect for couples or groups of two. Each self-contained apartment features a king bed, ensuite bathroom, a kitchen and private balcony overlooking the Estate. The homestead is nestled in the landscape and surrounded by newly established gardens. Originally built in 1975, it has recently been restored to offer guests a place to unwind with friends and family whilst overlooking the pool area, gardens and the distant hills.
